Decorating Advice
How to get started
Creating a flow from room to room
Selecting the right Home Dec In A Sec style for your room
Selecting the right Home Dec In A Sec style for your window type
How to get started
Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin when decorating a room. A good
place to start is with a color scheme. Selecting colors that you naturally gravitate
toward is always a safe route to take. You may just love the dramatic effect of
your friend’s deep red living room walls, however, you must think about
how you would feel in that room day after day. When choosing a wall color, buy
the smallest quantity available of the desired paint and apply it to a prominent
area on your wall. Look at the color at different times of the day and evening
to see how light affects the color. Another sure way to select the right color
is to ask a friend who has an eye for color hues. This is the type person who
will look at a white paint chip and tell you it has green in it, when all you
see is white! Also, the wall color feature in our Design-A-Window Studio will
assist you in seeing how different wall colors work to offset various fabric colors
and patterns. Back to Top
Creating a flow from room to room
Once you’ve selected a paint color for one room, the next step is to choose
coordinating colors for adjoining rooms. This helps create a unified flow in your
home and makes for easy decorating. Your choices for fabrics, rugs and coordinating
room items will be narrowed to those which work well with your color scheme. To
assist you in creating a pleasing flow, we’ve grouped all of our fabrics
into coordinating Fabric Collections in the Design-A-Window Studio and the Fabric
Shop. Fabrics within each collection were chosen specifically to coordinate with
each other so you can feel confident when making your selections. One fabric may
work well in your living room and another for your adjacent dining room. Back
to Top
Selecting the right Home Dec In A Sec style for your room
The best way to choose a window treatment style is to evaluate the overall function
and feel of the room. What is your decorating style? Are you trying to create
a casual, informal look or are you more traditional and formal in your tastes?
Casual styles include valances such as our Scalloped Pleat, Triangle or Classic
Shaped Valance. Another good bet for informal looks is to mount Gathered or Perfect
Pull panels from interesting rods and let the panels flow or “puddle”
gracefully onto the floor. For more classic decorating, swags of any style are
the way to go. We offer the traditional Swag and Jabot along with a more relaxed
yet elegant Pole Swag. Some of the hottest looks in window treatments right now
are the Trumpet or Fluted Swag treatments. All swags can be dressed up or down
with our beautiful array of decorative trims.
Another question to address is privacy - do you need the window coverings to provide both style and the ability to close out the world at the end of the day? For privacy, we recommend any of our Roman Shades, Gathered or Perfect Pull panel styles. Back to Top
Selecting the right Home Dec In A Sec style for your window
type
There are many tricks of the trade when it comes to choosing a window treatment
style for a particular type of window. Here are a few tips:
To enlarge small windows: A valance or swag treatment which extends at least 6”
out from your window molding or opening will give the illusion of a wider window
if you mount side panels beneath the treatment. The panels will stackback on the
wall allowing as much glass to show as possible.
To give windows more height: Plan to place your window treatment above the top
window molding or window opening by 3” or more or even at ceiling height
to give the illusion of a longer window. Be sure to measure your window accordingly.
To hide unsightly windows: Select a style which will cover most of the window
such as a valance with stationary side panels mounted beneath the valance.
Transom or arch top windows: These windows are too beautiful to hide! Treat the
area beneath the transom or arch and leave the windows above open so the light
can flow in.
French doors: Mount valances at ceiling height or try mounting two roman shades
directly on the doors.
Also helpful is our Email to a Friend feature. Sometimes showing
a friend what you’ve chosen helps in the decision making process. Back

How to use Fabric Collections on the website
For your convenience, our fabric line is divided into six groupings. Within each
group, you’ll find fabrics which coordinate well together. For example,
one fabric could be selected for your living room treatments and another for treatments
in an adjoining room or for use as an accent pillow or table topper. You may even
find fabrics from different collections which compliment each other. Be sure to
order fabric swatches first to ensure that the colors and textures are what you
expected. What you see on your computer monitor may vary slightly from actual
swatches. Back to Top
Ordering fabric swatches*
Order up to 10 supersized swatches for $5.00! The $5.00 charge will be refunded
with your custom window treatment order. Eleven or more swatches are $5.00 per 10 swatches.
We strongly recommend ordering swatches of all the fabrics you
are considering. Colors, texture, and the size of prints in print fabrics may
vary slightly from what appears on your computer screen. Ordering a swatch is
the best way to ensure your satisfaction. This allows you to see the colors and
feel the quality of the fabric.
*Lining and Trim swatches - call or e-mail us and we will send free swatches that coordinate with your decorator fabric.
To send a fabric swatch to the Shopping Cart, click Order Swatch below the selected fabric in the Order Swatches or Fabric Shop links. To see an enlarged view of the fabric, click on any fabric swatch in the Order Swatches or Fabric Shop links. In the Design-A-Window Studio click on Fabric Zoom for an enlarged view. This view will show you the entire repeating pattern of print fabrics along with the fabric price group and details. Note: You cannot get a zoom view of the coordinating lining fabrics or trims at this time. Back to Top
Ordering fabrics and trims by-the-yard
In the Fabric Shop, you can purchase any decorator fabric. Trims and linings are
not available for sale by-the-yard at this time. All decorator fabrics can be
purchased in 1/2 yard increments starting with a three yard minimum. Fabric orders
are shipped for free within 5 days. Home Dec In A Sec window treatment patterns
can also be purchased in the Sewing Patterns link. By-the-yard fabric orders will
be shipped separately from sewing pattern orders. Fabrics and patterns are not
returnable. Back to Top
Fabric Facts
All Home Dec In A Sec fabrics are top quality designer goods which are backed
by our manufacturer’s quality guarantee. To find out more about any Home
Dec In A Sec fabric, simply click on the fabric swatch in the Fabric Shop or Fabric
Zoom in the Design-A-Window Studio and the fabric content, fabric width, repeat
spacing and price group can be found. Back to Top
Trim Facts
In the Design-A-Window Studio, you’ll find that decorative trims can be
added to most window treatments. We have pre-selected trim styles which we feel
best compliment the window treatment style. Trims are also color matched to your
fabric so you can be assured that what you’re ordering will match the fabric.
You may notice that some window treatments do not offer trim as an option. If
trim is not offered, it’s because we felt trim would not enhance the look
of the window treatment or would possibly add too much weight to an edge, affecting
the look of the style.
Ordering Trim Swatches - send us an email at
CustomerService@HomeDecInASec.com indicating the window treatment, trim
style and colors you're interested in. (Example, Swag and Jabot, Tassel
Fringe, Taupe/White and Sage/Tan.) A 2" cut of trim* will be sent free
of charge with the Fabric Swatch Order you place on the website. In the
email, please include your Order Number, name, address and phone number.
Your Order Number is found below the subject line on the Swatch Order
Receipt you receive via email after placing a fabric swatch order. *For
3" tassel or key tassel, color samples of brush trim will be sent
instead. Back to Top
Trim Sizes
Here are the approximate sizes of each trim: Lipcord - 1/2” diameter, Brush
trim - 1 1/2” long, Tassel trim - 2” long, Bullion trim - 3”
long, Key Tassel - 4-1/2” long (available with Tassel Roman Shade only),
Tassel - 3” long (available with Triangle Valance only), Flat Braid - 7/8”
wide. Back to Top

Install It Right Guide
Your window treatment arrives ready to install. All board mounted swags, valances
and shades are installed on boards, ready for you to mount on your window molding
or wall. A complete Install It Right guide will be included with your order. This
guide provides easy to follow instructions for successfully mounting your window
treatment. Back to Top
Installing treatments over existing drapes or blinds
If you plan to mount your treatment over existing sheers, drapes or blinds, just
make sure you follow the measuring instructions in Measure It Right for your window
style. You may want to specify a 6” board clearance so the treatment will
comfortably clear the existing panels or blinds. Back to
Top
Tools needed to install window treatments
Only a few tools are needed to mount Home Dec In A Sec window treatments. Items
to have on hand include a screw driver, steel measuring tape, step stool and pencil.
Optional tools include a level and an electric drill to help install screw anchors. Back to Top
Window treatments are easy to install
Don’t be intimidated! Your window treatment arrives ready to install. The
process is easy - board mounted swags, valances or shades arrive with “L”
or angle brackets which you will attach to the board. The board is then secured
through the brackets to the window molding or wall with screws. All board mounted
orders include the hardware you’ll need to mount the treatment with the
exception of screw anchors. Depending upon your wall type, screw anchors may be
necessary and can easily be purchased at your local home center. For pole or rod
mounted treatments, you’ll need to install the pole or rod brackets. The
Install It Right guide provides helpful instructions for mounting your window
treatments. Back to Top
Do I need to include fraction measurements?
Fraction measurements are only needed when ordering one of our shade styles to
ensure the shade covers the window properly. For all other window treatments,
we recommend rounding up to the next number when measuring. Rounding up ensures
that the window treatment covers the window and will extend no more than 3/8”
on both sides. This will not be noticeable when the treatment is installed. Back
to Top
How to measure length for side jabots
To help you decide on a Side Jabot length for the Swag and Jabot and Pole Swag,
determine how much of the window you want to cover. Shorter lengths provide a
more casual valance appearance while longer jabot lengths are more formal and
help to frame the window. If you have a chair rail or a dividing line on your
wall, this might be a good ending point for your jabots. Measure from determined
height down to desired jabot length. Back to Top
Making windows appear wider or longer
A valance or swag treatment which extends at least 6” out from each side
of your window molding or opening will give the illusion of a wider window if
you mount side panels beneath the treatment. The panels will stackback on the
wall allowing as much glass to show as possible. To give the illusion of a longer
window, place your window treatment above the top window molding or window opening
by 3” or more or even at ceiling height. Measure accordingly. Back
to Top
Measuring French doors
Mount valances at ceiling height or above the door allowing enough room for the
door to open properly. Shade treatments can also be mounted directly on the doors.
Measure accordingly. Back to Top
Measuring transom windows
These windows are too beautiful to hide! Plan to mount the treatment beneath the
transom or arch and leave the windows above open so the light can flow in. Measure
accordingly. Back to Top
Tools to have on hand for measuring
A few simple measurements are all that’s needed to place your order. Our
Measure It Right pages found within the Design-A-Window Studio are designed to
guide you confidently through the measuring process. We recommend that you use
a steel measuring tape for the most accurate measurements. Purchase a steel measuring
tape at your local home center - you’ll find plenty of uses for it. A small
step stool or ladder is also very handy. It’s important to read your measurements
at eye level if possible for accuracy, especially for shades. Back

Caring for your window treatments
We recommend occasionally shaking or vacuuming your treatments to remove any loose

clean treatments every three to five years. Back to Top
Handling of prints in print fabrics
Window treatments made from print fabrics receive special attention and are constructed
with the prints appearing in the same places across the treatment to ensure a
uniform look. If two or more window treatments are ordered from a fabric with
large obvious prints, each treatment will be cut with the prints appearing in
the same places. Back to Top
Panel specifics- hems, headers, stackback and fullness
Hems - All panels feature double turned blind stitched bottom hems to create added
weight and body. This helps the panels hang evenly and maintain their shape. Weights
are hand sewn into the hem for additional stability. Side hems are double turned
with face fabric and lining and blind stitched. This creates a smooth, straight
appearance at the side edge.
Headers - The header is the fabric which extends above the rod pocket in our Gathered
Panels. Depending upon the look you want, you may choose to have no header above
the pole or up to a 3-1/2” header. You’ll find our recommendations
for header sizes in the Measure It Right section of the Gathered Panels.
Stackback - The stack back is the width each side panel measures when the panels
are pushed open. To maximize the view out of your window, place pole / rod brackets
on the wall out from the window molding or window opening so that the stackback
occurs on the wall, not on the window glass. We recommend that you measure 6”
or more out from your window molding or opening if you have the space so that
the panels will clear the glass and let as much light in as possible when opened.
Fullness - For window treatments indicating “two times fullness,”
the width of the treatment is two times the width of the window. Back
to Top
Perfect Pull panels are no fuss!
Perfect Pull panels feature twill tape stitched to the top BACK edge of each panel
at evenly spaced intervals. When panels are pulled closed, the tape pulls taut
ensuring evenly distributed fullness across the panels. Without the perfect pull
tape, the panels would lie flat in places when you pull them closed. No more fussing
with uneven panels! Back to Top

Roman Shade info
All shades arrive installed on a board, rigged with cording and a cord locking
mechanism. The bottom edge of each shade is weighted with a bar to ensure stability
when raising and lowering the treatment. You choose whether to mount the shade
inside the window opening/molding or outside the window opening/molding in the
Measure It Right step. A cord cleat is included as an added safety feature and
to keep cords neatly in place. Back to Top
Selecting Linings
All Home Dec In A Sec window treatments – valances, swags, shades and panels
are lined. If you are not prompted to select a lining, the treatment is lined
in a high quality sun and water resistant polycotton white drapery lining. Block
out lining is not available. You will notice that certain window styles require
you to select a contrast lining or the same fabric as the face (self lined). The
Design Details button provides information about where the lining appears on the
window treatment, i.e., entire valance, side jabots or trumpets. The lining swatches
that appear are color matched to the decorator fabric so you can order with confidence.
When choosing contrast linings, keep in mind that the back of your window treatment
may show from the outside of your home depending on the height at which the treatment
is mounted above the window. Back to Top
Swags are bias cut in most cases
All swags are bias cut to ensure smooth, soft folds unless the fabric selected
is a stripe or one way print. Back to Top
